Ring
brooch
with 6 turrets
RBWS10
Object: Ring brooch
Culture: Medieval. 13th-14th century
Area of Origin: UK.
Material: Copper alloy
Size: 26mm diameter
Weight: 3.86 grams
Notes: The brooch frame is complete and entire. Pin is
broken at the brooch join. There are 6 turret collets and 6 flat
lobes. One lobe houses the pin and the remaining 5 have dimples
in them.
It is unclear whether the low dimples were intended to have glass
stones set into them, but it is likely due to the lack of traces
of any adhesive, that these were merely decorative. The five of
the six high turrets contain traces of calcium carbonate paste
which would have been used to glue glass stones to the settings.
